Help Muskrats

I’ve found a baby muskrat. What should I do?

Muskrats are semi-aquatic rodents with partially webbed feet and hairless, somewhat flattened tails. Baby muskrats are weaned at approximately 4 weeks old and leave the lodge to be on their own shortly after.

About Muskrats

Muskrat mothers usually have 2-4 litters each year, with 4-8 kits in each litter. Much like eastern cottontail rabbits, muskrat moms don't stay with their babies all day long. They visit their kits a few times a day to nurse. The young are completely independent at 4 weeks old and about the size of a baseball. Healthy baby muskrats at this developmental stage should be left alone.

However, if a baby muskrat was caught by a cat or dog, whether or not they have obvious injuries, call us right away. As well, if a muskrat is injured or bleeding, has a head tilt, or is falling over, call us.
